He was a little lizard in the books that we didn't get to have because he would have cost one jillion dollars and the studio didn't want to pay one jillion dollars. But for those of us who are ready to enter into this world, the rewards of The Expanse, like the vast new frontier of outer space, are practically endless.I didn't get my mimic lizard, which made me very sad. You've gotta listen well to appreciate Martian expat Alex Kamal's (Cas Anvar) poetic retellings of life out in the deep, dark black. You've gotta really pay attention to understand Avasarala's near-flawless rise to the top, but I guarantee by Season 2 you'll do anything for her. Through simple osmosis, you'll learn what David Strathairn and Jared Harris mean when they launch into long monologues of Belter patois. But what's particularly impressive about The Expanse is, though the plots sometimes go all over the place, you'll reach a point where you suddenly realize you love these characters. Without spoiling actual plot events for those of you who might want to go back and watch it all from the beginning (you should!), half of the fourth season, which follows the fourth book in the series, Cibola Burn, takes place on an Earth-like planet in a faraway solar system which two opposing parties, Earth and the Belt, are attempting to colonize, while the planet itself seems to have other plans.Īs with a lot of hard sci-fi, the show is incrediblly complex and hard to parse (I've watched the third season in full twice over by now, and it still remains almost incomprehensible to me). Its view of the future is both bleak (i.e., it doesn't look like humans are going to stop warring with each other any time soon) and hopeful (if we can figure out how to colonize our corner of space, we can work together to find other habitable planets to start our lives on too). Like its view of humanity in our interstellar future, The Expanse is a little bit of everything: it's a bit of a space opera, a bit of a noir detective story, a bit of a western. In its second season and beyond, part of the story follows headstrong Martian marine Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams) as she loses faith with her home planet and throws in her lot with Holden and the crew of the Rocinante. On Earth, expert political schemer Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) is steadily gaining control of the United Nations, the governing body of the entire planet, while in the Belt, detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane) is unraveling the mystery of who has been pulling the strings to incite a war in the first place. In Season 1, Belter James Holden (Steven Strait) and his crew are drawn into a massive conspiracy involving an extraterrestrial and deadly "protomolecule" after their ship answers a phony distress call, knocking down the first domino in nearly starting a three-way war. The actual plot of The Expanse follows a number of plucky humans thrust into a cold war (which, in its third season, finally got pretty hot) between the three distinct powers, all vying for control and respect in their quadrant of the solar system. Jeff Bezos himself announced the decision in May 2018 at the International Space Development Conference, and we were off to the races. It makes some sense: weird genre stuff like sci-fi often does a lot better via streaming than it does on cable, which is what made Amazon Prime's quick rescue - after a massive campaign by the show's very passionate, very loud fans - so exciting. It was also cancelled suddenly in 2018 because Syfy's agreement to air the series relied on live viewership numbers, and, according to them, it just wasn't doing well enough. Both the books and the show have won multiple awards, including the prestigious Hugo, and for those of us who desperately missed the likes of Battlestar Galactica and Stargate, this series was exactly what we were waiting for. Corey, the joint pen name of writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, and each season corresponds to one individual book. The show is based on the series of novels, novellas, and short stories written by James S. The Expanse is back.įor the uninitiated, The Expanse, whose fourth season just dropped on Amazon Prime this week (and whose first three seasons were broadcast on Syfy), is a futuristic space opera in which humanity has colonized our solar system over a couple of centuries and three major powers have arisen: the sedentary and oxygen-rich Earth, the militaristic Mars, and the constantly exploited Asteroid Belt. You may have sensed, within the constant bass whine of our universe's cosmic background radiation, something shift, like the preordained ballooning of outer space juddered once on its otherwise smooth track. You may have heard a rumbling in the cosmos.

I have found Keynote to be a far superior product, both in features and ease of use. Today, I only keep PowerPoint around for opening someone else's PowerPoint files. The more I used Keynote, the less I liked PowerPoint. But during that time, they kept adding in new features. It took them a couple of years to get it right. Eventually, Apple introduced Keynote for Mac, which included most of what had been in Persuasion and much more. But it took Microsoft several years to make it work as smoothly as Persuasion and they never got it completely right. Over the years, PowerPoint added in some of the cool features of Persuasion. When Adobe, who Aldus merged with, discontinued Persuasion, I had to switch to the much less capable PowerPoint. I have been using presentation software since Aldus Persuasion. If you want original graphics then you should be creating them in some other app (like Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and then importing them into PowerPoint. It is absolutely not good for creating original art or illustrations, even though many users seem to think so. It could be more user-friendly, which is where some of the competing presentation apps excel. Like all Microsoft products, PowerPoint has it's eccentricities. Users can create online slideshows, clickable infographics, and embed original graphics and videos. It is also rather versatile, allowing users to do far more that slide-based presentations. PowerPoint is a straightforward tool for making and showing presentations with an interface that is very much "what-you-see-is-what-you-get." It is also the dominant presentation software, meaning that you will probably never find a client or venue that will have problems with any presentation you created in PowerPoint. It takes some practice to truly master, but once you've spent quality time working with the software you can do some good stuff. In my many years of using the product and sending presentations to people all around the globe, I have never once had someone tell me they could not open a file or report any problems with their presentation. Even the most novice user can craft something professional by editing over the top of one of these templates. It also provides the tools and color pallets to customize these templates to fit your brand, giving you a shortcut to professional-looking documents that will wow at your next meeting. Microsoft has always ensured that each new piece of software is on brand, and Publisher is no different. While Publisher doesn't look as clean or well designed as other apps, it does retain a similar feel to that of Word or Powerpoint.įortunately for users, the interface is easy to use, and it won't take long to get to grips with the various tabs and functionality on offer. If you use other Microsoft 365 apps, it'll take even less time to understand where everything is and to use Publisher at its full potential. The top bar hosts most functionality options, including different color pallets, while drag and drop boxes make creating new documents a breeze. Minimal design knowledge is needed, with the drag and drop functionality doing most of the leg work. Unfortunately, many users will find themselves excluded from Publisher's target market. Now, putting these values in the formula, Here, GA is 2, VE is 4, Valency of Carbon is 4 and there is no charge present on the molecule. VE = valence electrons on the central atom GA = group of atoms attached to the central atom There is a simple formula that can be used to determine the hybridization of HCN easily, It is important to find the hybridization of any compound because it gives us an insight into how the electrons are distributed in different orbitals. Now let’s move to see the hybridization of the compound. We hope that you got a clear idea of how the bonds between HCN are made. This is the most stable Lewis structure that can be made for HCN. So as carbon has two electrons left thus it can make 2 more bonds with nitrogen, leaving nitrogen with only one pair of lone electrons. Thus, there will be additional bond pairing between carbon and nitrogen. So a lot of lone pairs will only make the compound unstable in nature. Step 3: Balancing the charges on the compound. The octet of hydrogen is complete so there are no lone pairs on it.Īnd for nitrogen, after sharing one electron with carbon it is left with 4 electrons which means there are 2 lone pairs of electrons on it. Here, after two electrons carbon share with hydrogen and nitrogen each, it is left with 2 more electrons in the outer shell. To make the representation clean we have to show the remaining lone pair of electrons on the atoms too after the initial bonds are made. The other two atoms H and N are attached to C by a single bond. However, hydrogen is the least electronegative but it cant be a central atom because it has only one spare electron. Now you can see that the central atom here is Carbon because it is easy for Carbon to become stable as it is the least electronegative of all. Step 2: Now we will draw the Lewis dot structure of the compound. Now to find the total number of valence electrons we will add up the valence electrons of all three atoms: The atomic number of Carbon is 6 so 2 electrons are filled in ‘s’ orbital and the rest 4 are in the outer orbital that is why the valence number of electrons in carbon is 4.įor Nitrogen, its atomic number is 7, so after 2 electrons occupy ‘s’ orbital, the rest 5 are in the outer orbital so the valence number of electrons is 5. Similarly, the valence electrons of Carbon are 4 and that of Nitrogen is 5. The number of valence electron is only 1 in Hydrogen because it is an exception atom which doesn’t follow the octet rule and thus doesn’t need 8 electrons to fill its octet but needs only 1. Here we have to find the valence electrons of all three atoms, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen. Step 1: The foremost step of creating a Lewis structure is finding the valence electrons. Thus to understand the Lewis structure in-depth let’s go step by step in understanding the concept.įirst of all, to remind you Lewis’s structure is a pictorial representation of different bonds and lone pair of electrons between two or more atoms of a compound. Some compounds have a very unique and different Lewis structure and HCN is one of those. Well, now enough of the basic introduction, let us move ahead and look at the Lewis structure of the compound and see how the bonds are formed in HCN. However, if inhaled in a small amount, the compound can get metabolized by the human body. The compound is distributed so fast in our bodies that the effects can be seen instantly. Some research authors have said that we can find HCN in neurons. We can obtain HCN from the pits of fruits. There are other methods to create HCN too but they need outer push or energy to form this compound, for example, reactor walls.ĭid you know that HCN is present in nature as well? There are different places from where we can obtain HCN. This reaction is completed when Platinum is added as a catalyst. When methane reacts with ammonia and oxygen we get hydrogen cyanide and water. The boiling point of the compound is 78.1 deg F and the melting point is 7.9 deg F.īelow are the reactions or methods which lead to the creation of this compound: The molecular weight of HCN is 27.025 g/mol. It is considered to be a dangerous and poisonous substance that is stored carefully to avoid any leaks or combustion because the storage containers if exposed to extreme heat might cause explosions. The smell can be categorized as being that of bitter almonds HCN has a very strong and pungent smell which is not favorable for humans. The compound is a colorless substance that is available in liquid or gaseous form. Hydrogen Cyanide is a very toxic acid and is famous for causing irritation in the eyes and respiratory system if any human inhales HCN in substantial quantity. The budget’s components, a number of which are not clearly budgetary, include a combination of the reinforcement of police/judicial repression of the working class, largesse for the capitalist elite, and underfunding of social programs, all in the context of rising inflation, a new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the escalating US-NATO war against Russia in Ukraine, which could lead to a nuclear holocaust. Garland would eat a diet of coffee and chicken soup, with cigarettes to suppress her appetite. Judy Garland was given a steady stream of adrenaline shots to pep her up and then Seconal to help her sleep at night, all while being rigorously monitored that she didn’t gain any weight. Hamilton was off of work for 2 months recovering from her injuries, which at the time was a nearly unheard of sabbatical for the fast-paced and brutal world of Hollywood. Margaret Hamilton played the Wicked Witch and was severely burned (and her stunt double was also injured in another on-set accident) when a trap door failed to remove her from a scene where a live pyrotechnic device shrouds her in a mist of sparks and smoke. The Wizard of Ozset was so hot due to the bright lights needed for the filming in Technicolor that many of the crew reportedly fainted under them and frequent breaks were needed by most of the people on-set. The Cowardly Lion costume, which was made from a real lion hide, was dangerously hot and the actor inside (Bert Lahr) got really overheated. But, just imagine being inside a rigid costume and not even being able to sit down on your breaks. Via/ Instagramįun fact, Ebsen’s voice is the one you hear singing some of the songs in the film and on the soundtrack because the parts he sang before he fell ill were never re-recorded. While he was gone Ebsen’s job was given to Jack Haley in what would be an extremely illegal practice today. The Tin Man’s makeup was silver in color and contained aluminum powder, which one actor (Buddy Ebsen, better known as Jed Clampett) was severely allergic to, causing him to spend weeks in the hospital barely able to breathe and suffering muscle contractions and more time away from the studio to fully recover. Staff such as lighting and rigging crew belonged to unions, but the actors had little protection against unsafe work environments since Via/ Wiki Commons 6) A Sprinkle of Dust The Wizard of Oz was released in 1939 and during that era Hollywood studio heads would use any means necessary to get the results they wanted. She later left her husband for the mayor, which we can all agree was a huge step up.The Wizard of Oz has been called one of the most dangerous films ever made! While there weren’t a lot of motorcycle chases or high jumps, no guns or blanks, the cast and crew did have to contend with some pretty scary stuff in order to make the most beloved film of all time. One of the apparently less in-hand Munchkin actors, Charles Kelley, brought two loaded guns to set one day to either intimidate or legitimately injure the mayor of Munchkin City for flirting with his wife, who also played a Munchkin. With regards to those hangovers, the Munchkins were known for getting wild after hours, with Garland later claiming, “They got smashed every night, and the police used to scoop them up in butterfly nets,” and producer Mervyn Leroy writing that they “they had orgies in the hotel, and we had to have police on about every floor,” though he excused their behavior by explaining that “to make a picture like The Wizard of Oz, everybody had to be a little drunk with imagination.” The Munchkin actors insisted that only a handful of them were big partiers, but how big does an orgy have to be before it’s a situation? 2 When a Munchkin Brought a Gun to a No-Fight The Cowardly Lion suit was made out of real lion pelts that weighed nearly 100 lbs., and the body odor of an actor forced to move around in a heavy, unbreathable animal carcass combined with the smell of, you know, an animal carcass resulted in an unimaginable stink. They did get to use a real lion - in a fashion. Then they realized it would be way less dangerous to just put a guy in a suit. 15 The Cowardly Lion Was Almost a Real Lionĭuring pre-production, a lot of wild ideas were tossed around about how to present the Cowardly Lion, including stealing Disney’s thunder and animating him in or, somewhat less riskily, using Leo the Lion from MGM logo fame and dubbing his lines. Even eight decades later, there are almost certainly no other movies that were as chaotic behind the scenes. If The Wizard of Oz were a person, we’d be checking them into a home and politely nodding our heads while they tell us about the time they blew up Margaret Hamilton, but that’s not a dementia-induced invention. Not to alarm you, but The Wizard of Oz is 83 years old. In the study, the chimps consistently outperformed humans, and some chimps were able to remember 9 digits over 90 of the time.
